Whether winter or summer people will head out on the open road for the wonderful sights of Australia. We all have imagined the perfect trip but there are times even the best plans don’t go our way. How do you deal with mishaps on the road?
Flat tyres are never fun. But getting one on an unfamiliar highway is just plain miserable. The obvious precaution before you set out on a road trip is to check your tyres. Make sure that the tread is enough to last the trip and that the pressure is suitable for the road and recommended levels for your car. It never hurts to carry a spare tyre and take the same precautions as you do for your regular tyres along with a jack. Also better to brush up on your knowledge of how to change tyres just in case. IF you do find yourself unprepared with a flat tyre keep a look out for the closest gas station to find help. Also, keep the number of your insurance company and roadside assistance.
The open road isn’t for everyone and many people suffer some form of motion sickness. If you or any one of your passengers get car sick, it could dampen the joy of a trip. It is therefore important to know beforehand if any of the passengers suffer from such problems. Cleaning supplies, plastic bags, some extra clothes and any required medication. And lastly, stay calm to keep the passenger not feeling embarrassed about the whole situation.
On summer trips an overheated car is one of the most common mishaps. It is important to keep an extra bottle of coolant and plenty of water when packing. If at any point you do see the check engine light on, the first thing that needs to be done is to turn off the AC. While it may get a little warm in the car it will be better, in the long run, to not have to wait on the side of the road waiting for your car to cool down. If everything else fails, it’s best to pull over and turn your car off. Wait for approximate 30 minutes for the car to cool down. Once the car is at a safe temperature, check the coolant and any leaks. If you do find any problems best to call for reinforcements otherwise, you may refill your coolant and get back on the road.
Other problems may include running out of fuel or getting lost. Before going out on your trip best to plan the need for fuel and possible station stops to stay ahead of the game, also a good navigation app on your phone can help you stay on track.
